What is a certified nurse midwife?

  • CNMs are registered nurses who have completed graduate education and who have passed a national certification exam. There are nurse-midwives practicing in every state in the US. The rate of births attended by nurse-midwives has been steadily growing and currently over 8% of babies in the United States are delivered by CNMs. This growth has been supported by published research that demonstrates certified nurse-midwifery care is high-quality affordable care. Recipients of care by certified nurse-midwives report high levels of patient satisfaction, and nurse-midwifery care results in lower costs due to fewer unnecessary, invasive, and expensive interventions. CNMs work in collaboration with other members of the healthcare team including obstetrician/gynecologists.
  • The majority (98%) of these births occur in a hospital setting. CNMs provide quality care to women throughout the lifespan, not just for pregnancy and birth. CNM care includes:
  • Well woman (gynecologic) care
  • Care before (pre-conceptual visits) and during pregnancy, birth as well as care post birth
  • Family planning and contraception
  • Adolescent care
  • Care during menopause and beyond.
  • CNM care is safe and cost effective.
